Timesheet Dashboard

Core part of the “Time & Attendance” mega feature release - Leading to a 12% boost in revenue

Customers were in need of somewhere to track their own and their team’s attendance against assigned working hours. Early user research revealed that this was a very popular request from existing customers.

The Problem

To create a dashboard system that works in tandem with working hours and activity statuses, that serves as a visual and quantitative tool for admins of the Portal and general users of the Companion App.

The Objective

I designed an intuitive interface for the new dashboard feature, for the desktop portal and mobile app, using user research feedback and working directly with stakeholders.

The Solution

Creating initial wireframes, conducting user research, stakeholder interviews & workshops to confirm user flows, stakeholder involvement to help inform iteration & create a robust and easy-to-use dashboard. Please see the process steps below.

The Process

Research and Ideation

Some early sketches for timesheet on the portal & Companion App

  • As this was a brand new feature for the portal, we were able to jump straight in to collecting research and inspiration to help inform ideation.

  • The company wanted to expand it’s offerings with a Time & Attendance add-on offering so there were a lot of ideas floating about for this. I researched into existing timesheet management systems and software to try and get a gauge on how in-depth they went.

  • I had to keep in mind that stakeholders were not looking for a completely robust HR or payroll system, but something simple that can be easily read, with simple exporting functions and the ability to expand to more complex features in quarters to come.

    1. Admins & finance employees - using the portal to track working hours and use payroll.

    2. Everyday employees that use the Companion App.

After some feedback sessions including stakeholder interviews based on these early sketches, I came back with these main notes:

Designs

…and Beyond (Part 2 - Export capability)

Part 2 of the timesheet project at this point, consisted of creating a function to be able to export the information against groups, individuals and groups of individuals. This was part of the initial release of Time & Attendance.

Created high fidelity, dev-ready dashboard & export function designs that were presented to stakeholders, then taken through the agile process before being released. The Time & Attendance release contributed to a 12% revenue increase within the first quarter.

The Impact

The sheer complexity of this project was a challenge that I had to overcome because there were so many technical moving parts that influenced one another. I found it extremely helpful to take a step back and try to look at the bigger picture when something wasn’t working. It was truly rewarding to hear that our product work on Time & Attendance made such an impact to the company’s revenue.
